Eli’s jaw dropped with an audible click. What the holy hell? Sure, he understood what the texting abbreviations meant, and therefore got the gist of it. You angry? I’m at Stake at the moment. See you for drinks tonight? Lost without you. Eli recognized the number. It was Luke’s.

Which meant Luke was sitting in his truck right now, texting Eli about his intentions, whereabouts and goings-on, and asking Eli to meet him at Stake. Eli had wanted a sign from Luke about what was happening, and now he got it.

Eli’s fingers hovered over the keypad before his brain had even caught on. But once he did, he let his fingers do the walking. “MRAU. MYT.” Message received and understood. Meet you there.

He flicked the lip down, shoved the phone back into his pocket, stepped out of the car, and beelined for Luke’s truck. At some point Luke must have detected Eli’s approach because the driver side door opened with a creak and Luke hopped out, his gaze aimed directly at Eli.

Eli stopped before he got to touching distance. He worried he might hit the guy on the nose just for the hell of it. He crossed his arms over his chest and tried to rein in his confusion and annoyance. And he sure as heck wasn’t going to speak first.

“Texting with abbreviations? That’s kind of adolescent.” Eli could have kicked himself for speaking first, but all he could do was grit his teeth till his jaw hurt and wait for Luke to join the conversation.

Luke at least had the courtesy to blush, rubbing the back of his neck while appearing sheepish. “I was going for succinct.”

“You should be in the hospital,” Eli reminded Luke, wanting to stay angry.

Luke nodded, staring at his feet. “Yeah, I know. Never been a fan of those places.”

“You think healing the sick is a bad thing?” Eli snapped.

Luke looked up, frowning, as if he had trouble believing what he was hearing. “What the hell kind of question is that? Of course not. I just don’t like hanging around there when I’m fine, taking up a bed from someone who really needs it.”

“Right, of course. Silly me, thinking that a head injury merited a night at a hospital.” Eli let his sarcasm show, which was rare for him. How had things come to this? It had been so easy between him and Luke before. Now it was all falling apart. If ever there was a cautionary tale about not fucking someone you didn’t know, this was it. Of course, minus hypothetical abuse, violence or rape. Great, now Eli felt even worse for being such a drama queen. “Luke… What is going on? What do you want from me?”

Luke took a step forward but when he saw Eli stiffening he took the same step back. “Look, I…I know I’ve acted weird and shit. Even if you believe nothing else I say, please believe that all I want is to catch the vet’s killer.”

Now Eli was simply perplexed.
